DevBhumi works with village communities across 6 districts of Uttarakhand (Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri). The aim of the enterprise is to preserve artisanal skills (silk rearing, spinning, weaving), giving employment to local communities, especially women. Over 6000 households participate in DevBhumi's economic activities. Of these more than 4000 are shareholders in the company and the vast majority of these are women. These producers live in remote mountain villages in the upper Himalayas of Garhwal, Uttrakhand. They are spinners of yarns, weavers of fine fabrics, beekeepers/organic honey harvesters, and organic spice cultivators. The villagers are active in income generating activities that are parallel with conserving the forest and its habitants.
